The 10 Carmandments, by Peter Krogh

“Why Yes, I Do Belong on the Road”

Each one of these "carmandmants" warrants a healthy discussion and detailed analysis which I don’t have time to initiate.   However, I thought it might be worth sharing.  And, of course, there are many more tips that aren’t specifically included in this very simple list.  If there were some sort of foundation and website set up, an RIP section would be useful to illustrate the risk we all encounter every day. Morbid, but useful. How come there’s nothing like this out there now?

For the record, I despise groups like Critical Mass. While I understand the principle and the method, the combination is grossly counter-productive. Critical Mass, groups of cyclists who don’t let cars by, individuals who blatantly break traffic laws, all create an image of the cyclist as a self-interested, above-the-law boor. This behavior underscores the notion in the motorist’s mind that all cyclists are scoff-laws and therefore undeserving of common-rights courtesy.

This is deadly and I have no patience for people whose behavior paints a target on my back.

I, the Roadie

1. I understand I am slower than cars and will endeavor not to impede the flow of traffic.
2. I will obey all traffic laws.
3. I will ride on the shoulder when there is one and it's not covered with glass and gravel.
4. I will comport myself in a courteous and professional manner, even if I’m not a professional cyclist.
5. When you're behind me and you see me wave back to you, it means I know you’re there and I thank you for not running me off the road.

I, the Driver

1. I understand that bicycles have the same rights to the road and acknowledging that a bicycle rider's physical vulnerability is an order of magnitude greater than mine.
2. I will pass as soon as it’s safe and give a cyclist three feet of space. I understand that the 5 seconds I may save by passing a cyclist in a blind corner is not worth a human life.
3. I will not throw objects, hurl insults, or attempt to harm a cyclist whether I’m on or off my meds.
4. I will not drink, text, or otherwise impair my ability to handle my vehicle properly.
5. I understand that when a cyclist in front of me waves, my presence has been acknowledged and I'm being thanked for not mowing him or her down.

SERT participated in over 50 races this year.  Here's a link to 90 highlight photos.  Please note the entire set of 90 photos will download, so you won't be able to exit the page until all of them have downloaded (I'm working on fixing that):  2010 Race Photos.
