Jim Rogers Memorial Ride (Feb 11)
The 3rd Annual Jim Rogers Memorial Ride will be held
Saturday, February 11th, 2012. The flyer is
HERE. The event will again include two
rides, according to Carolyn Jones-Rogers, wife of the late Jim Rogers, a
Nevada City cycling icon who was killed in 2010 when struck by car while
riding his bicycle on Highway 174. One ride is about 6 miles long
and follows Old Downieville Highway, while the other — known as the
Newtown Loop by Rogers — is 16 miles in distance. SHO-AIR/SERT
members can add out-and-back rides to Bridgeport and Mooney Flat to
increase the loop to 50 miles. The ride starts at TONC at 11 AM.
2012 Winter Training Camp (Feb 16-21) This will be our 5th year Winter Training Camp in Buellton and promises to break last year's
attendance record of 28 riders. The dates for training camp
are set for our first ride on Thursday, Feb 16th ending with a short,
final ride on Tuesday, Feb 21. The dates
were moved 2 weeks later then prior years to accommodate the teachers among us,
taking advantage of the 3-day Presidents' weekend. If you have gone before you know
this is a terrific riding experience, even if you don't plan to race
later in the year. If you've
not been before then you're missing a great chance to
hang out and ride with the greatest group of people around (namely SHO-AIR/SERT).
The camp is based out of Buellton near Solvang, a 6-7 hour drive from
the Grass Valley area.
Members arrive Wednesday evening and start riding festivities on
Thursday, but you can show for just 1 day or all 6. Rides vary from
40-80 miles and all have long and short options.
There is no charge for the camp, and you're welcome to invite others
outside the club/team. Room and board is up to you (this is not a
paid event). Many of us stay at the Marriott, but there are plenty
of
other hotels and motels in town. There's also an RV campground,
http://flyingflags.com/, where many
participants stay.
Dinners are semi-organized to chaotic as it's difficult to get the
entire group together at a
reasonably-priced restaurant. Your best bet is to make plans with
others during the ride, but Dan Goldsmith will try to
pre-arrange some reservations for the entire group. We'll go over
any plans before we leave on the ride each day.
A review of last year's training camp rides in a 5-part video can be
found HERE.

About
SERT/Sho-Air The
Sierra Express Racing Team (SERT) presented by Sho-Air is based in
Nevada City, CA. The team was created in 1980 by Tour of Nevada
City Bicycle Shop owners Ron Miller and Jim Rogers. Local riders and sponsors
resurrected the race team in late 2004. Primary sponsor Sho-Air
joined SERT in 2009, providing much-needed support for race
entries in hundreds of mountain, road, and cyclocross events throughout
Northern California.
